Dispatch from: Nicaragua

Central America's next big thing...

Between red-hot Cartagena's energy, chic style and amazing food, and the resurgence of Costa Rica with amazing properties like Nayara and the newly revamped Four Seasons, Central America is heating up. Nicaragua -- with its local flavor, adventure, and of course rum & coffee -- should be on your radar next.

Here you will enjoy warm waters, despite it being the Pacific. While easily combinable with other destinations, Nicaragua stands on its own. It is a gorgeous country with natural wonders, lakes, beaches and volcanoes.

Our team recently ventured out to meet up with one of the two Pellas brothers, who built hotels in Nicaragua highlighting the beautiful landscape of vegetation and ocean: Mukul and Nekupe.

Mukul

Location & Getting there: You'll fly into Managua is a short 2-hour flight from Miami, and then drive. You can also fly into Costa Esmerelda, the local airport which opened in 2015 and is 5 minutes from Mukul.

Getting around: Explore the property via golf cart, bicycle or enjoy the hilly landscape by foot.

Property: Mukul has partnered with Auberge Resorts offering barefoot luxury in rustic chic style.

Choose between spacious Beach Villas or Bohios in the hills, both with plunge pools and outdoor space to relax. 3-5 bedroom Residences Homes and Presidential Suites, perfect for groups or families, sit further back accessible by golf cart, some with views of the ocean or the 5th Hole.

The beautiful property offers plenty to do and see for your adventure enthusiasts.

Do not to miss the Rum Room! A local expert will share the history of the Flor Cana brand of high end special Rums. The story alone makes you fall in love with the Rum before even taking a sip!

Explore 6 different treatment suites at the Spa all with individual themes. The quality of the surfing facilities and instruction is second to none. Even if you are not a surfer, you can’t go wrong getting on a board here – every single person in the group was up in less than an hour!

Anticipate “Island Time”,  relax or not, and get a jump start on what’s bound to be Nicaragua’s hot spot!

Nekupe

Nekupe Sporting Resort and Retreat is a 1,300-acre nature reserve in Nicaragua’s Pacific countryside that offers opportunities to stimulate your mind, your body and your soul.

Nekupe

Location & Getting there: An easy 1.5-hour drive from Mukul makes it simple to combine the two properties (ideally doing Nekupe first and then the beach to follow). You are really in the middle of nowhere, off the tiny town of Nadaime. All of that is forgotten the moment you arrive and experience the property’s welcome.

Standing in a line was each of our “rangers” (each room gets their own) who escort you to your own ATV for use during your stay. As you make your way to the club house with a fresh glass of dragon fruit juice and rum, it was really a spectacular welcome to Nekupe.

Stay 5 nights to truly experience the variety of long day trips and places to explore in the resort, in addition to 1 or 2 more days to delve outside of the property.

Nekupe is just under 2 hours from Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Managua and only 30 minutes from Granada. Expect a bumpy and rocky road for the last 25 minutes of your journey towards the resort which can be a bit rough and rugged.

Room product: Instead of the anticipated Rustic Chic similar to Mukul, this is sleek, sexy and everything is so well appointed.

Villas: With spectacular views of the Mombacho Volcano, 3 Villas and a Junior villa are just outside the main building. Perfect for those traveling together, these rooms are all near each other.

Residence building :This 4 bedroom (with an optional 5th) residential enclave is perfectly suited for 1-2 families or a group traveling together. The 2 bedroom Grand Suite and additional suites are separated by the living room. And an incredible outdoor space with private pool, lounges, 2 decks, and jaw dropping views truly makes it feel exactly that, a residence.
