As the temperatures dip this November, I am dreaming of the tropical paradise of Laucala Island in Fiji. Laucala, pronounced “lah-tha-la” is more than a hotel; it is an over the top all-inclusive island experience that caters to the luxury traveler’s every need. With just 25 villas set amid coconut plantations, turquoise lagoons and deserted beaches, the experience is truly personalized to you. Your Tao (literally translated to “my friend” aka butler) will cater to your every need from setting up dining on your private beach to horseback riding through the rainforest (on the island’s own 8 Fijian horses). Laucala has all the romance of the South Pacific that you can imagine.
Having thought of it all, Laucala allows private aircrafts to land right on the island where guests can clear customs and immigration by request. No airport hassle necessary; arrive calm, cool and collected and be whisked away to your private villa. There is also a direct flight from LAX to Nadi Fiji and Laucala will pick you up on their private plane and deliver you to the island.
The rooms come with thatched roofs, sun decks and private pools lit by tiki torches so you never need to leave your room if you don’t want to. If you chose to, each room comes with its own private buggy to explore the island.
Step out of your villa onto your own private beach or enjoy the island’s main pool area where you can mingle with other guests or take the perfect Instagram photo in the clear above ground lap pool.
Looking for more? Splurge for the 2 bedroom overwater villa which appears to float right over the lagoon. You can arrive by private yacht directly to your room, of course.
If you think being secluded on an island with few other guests would limit your activities, think again! The island has a fleet of 14 boats and can assist with windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking, jet skiing. There are 5 restaurants, a drop-dead gorgeous spa, and an 18-hole championship golf course with greens overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
If that wasn’t enough to peak your interest, I should mention that Laucala’s owner Mr. Dietrich Mateschitz purchased a private submarine- the Deep Flight Super Falcon Mark II. With the myriad of coral reefs and water life around the island diving is extremely popular. However if diving isn’t your thing, take a ride in the island’s very own 2 seater “flying“submarine. You’ll never even have to get wet!
Perhaps one of the most impressive parts of the island is the sustainability factor. The island grows most of its own produce on a 240 acre hydroponic garden. Everything from organic spinach and eggplant to chilies and pineapple are grown on the island. Most of the seafood is caught within a mile of the shore while the island’s farm is home to sheep, pigs, and poultry. At 80% sustainability, you can rest easy knowing you not only having an authentic Fijian experience but you are helping preserve the ecosystem.
While on the topic of wellness, Laucala allows guests to pick their own organic spices flowers and fruits to create signature essential oils, soaps and lotions in the Spa Kitchen. While the island is fully equipped with a state-of-the-art fitness center, a personal trainer can help with an outdoor more scenic workout.
I can’t imagine a better place to practice my headstand. Rumor has it the island looks just as gorgeous upside down.
